Samtengang Winter Trek - 5 Days

Day 1: Arrive at Paro Airport
During the journey to Paro, one will experience breath-taking view of Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga and other famous Himalayan peaks, including the sacred Jumolhari and Mount Jichu Drake in Bhutan. On arrival at Paro Airport, you will be received by our representative and transfer to the hotel. Overnight at the hotel in Paro.


Day 2: Paro Sightseeing
Visit the National Museum (Ta-Dzong), initially the Watch Tower to defend Paro Rinpung Dzong which now offers an unique and varied collections of ancient armor, textiles, antique thangkha paintings, and natural life. Then visit the Rinpung Dzong, massive fortress located on a hilltop above the Paro Valley. The Dzong houses the District Administration Office and the District Monk Body. Afternoon drive up the valley to the Drukgyel Dzong, a ruined fortress where Bhutanese warriors fought Tibetan invadors centuries ago. The snowy dome of sacred Jumolhari, "mountain of goddess" looms directly over the Dzong. On the way back you visit a typical Bhutanese farmhouse. Visit 7th century Kichu Lhakhang, one of the 108 temples built in the Himalayas by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. This temple reflects the introduction of Buddhism in Bhutan. Overnight at the hotel in Paro.


Day 3: Paro - Thimphu
After breakfast drive to Thimphu, the capital town passing via idyllic countryside, through villages and paddy fields. In the afternoon visit Tashichhodzong: the seat of the government, Memorial Chorten; the stupa built in the memory of Bhutan's Third King and Handicrafts Emporium displying rich traditional crafts of the Kingdom. Just below the town, you may also catch a game of archery in progress at the Changlingmithang. Evening take a stroll around market area. Overnight at the hotel in Thimphu.


Day 4: Thimphu - Khuruthang
Proceed to Khuruthang crossing Dochula pass (3,100m). The pass offers the most spectacular view over the high peaks of the Himalayas on a clear day. Lunch at the campsite. After lunch, drive down to Punakha and visit the Dzong situated at the junction of Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers.


Day 5: Khuruthang - Limukha
Drive till Punakha. The trek begins with the gradual climb through Chir Pine forests. On the way, visit a village called Dompala.


Day 6: Limukha - Chungsakha
The trail today takes you through rhododendron and oak forested area. Enroute pass a famous Drukpa Kuenlay Lhakhang. Overnight in camp. Distance 14 Km. about 5/6 hours walk.

Day 7: Chungsakha - Samtengang
The trail now takes you through the village of Sha Wangdue District. Camp at Samtengang at lakeside. Distance 13 km, about 5 hours.


Day 8: Samtengang - Wangdue/Thimphu
The trail now drops down till the motor road. Drive till Wangdiphodrang and lunch at the Guest House. After lunch drive to Thimphu. En route vist Druk Wangyel monastery at Dochula Pass which is the only of its kind in the country with elaborate paintings depicting the lineage of the present monarchy and their visionary works. Continue drive to Thimphu and check into hotel on arrival. Overnight at the hotel in Thimphu.


Day 9: Thimphu Sightseeing
Visit Simtokha Dzong. This is one of the oldest fortresses in Bhutan. It was built in 1629 A.D. Visit the Wood Craft and Painting School where traditional art and crafts are still kept alive. After a relaxing lunch, visit the National Institute of Traditional Medicine and a traditional paper factory. Overnight at the hotel in Thimphu.


Day 10: Paro Airport
Transfer to the aiport for depature.

THINGS TO BRING FOR A TREK IN BHUTAN
Personal clothing: strong normal clothing (according to season). Preferably cotton, even for summer, woolen clothing for the evening and winter.

For Trekking, one must bring:
Strong comfortable trekking boots: water-resistant for the rainy period-June-August.
Sunscreen
Flash light
Rain coat (especially for rainy period -June-August)
Head gear/hat/cap; sun and rain protection
Water pills - for extra caution in purifying stream; (boiled water is provided at all times during the trek)
Aspirin - incase of altitude sickness
Lots of socks
Warm clothes.
